Bacillus subtilis strain 168
Bacillus subtilis is a the most highly studied gram positive bacterium.
In particular, it possess effective secretion systems, is known to be naturally competent for the uptake of DNA and is highly motile.
Strain 168 is one of the most commonly used in the laboratory and its specific genome has been sequenced.
Characterisation
Growth
A simple model for the growth of B. subtilis where the rate of growth is related to the amount of nutrients available was produced. More details about this model and the results can be found by [http://2008.igem.org/Team:Imperial_College/Growth_Curve clicking this link]GROWTH CONSTANT (A): 1.3494 | HILL COEFFICIENT (n): 1.25 |
Motility
A detailed analysis of the swimming motility of B. subtilis was carried out, which led us, among other things, to develop a simple mechanical model for the swimming motility of B. subtilis. Using manual tracking, x,y coordinate data was extracted from the cell trajectory. This has allowed fitting of experimental data with the model and suggests that flagellar force of B. subtilis is Exponentially distributed.
